Da Brat released her debut album titled Funkdafied in 1994. This creation secured the 11th rank on the rap albums chart. This album also went platinum and eventually Da Brat became the first female rapper whose copies sold more than one million copies.

October 2007 found Da Brat getting entangled in an assault at the Studio 72 nightclub in Atlanta during a Halloween party. In a heated argument with the hostess, Da Brat attacked her from behind striking her on the face with a rum bottle.
Her arrest resulted in incarceration for three years followed by a court hearing. She was also assigned 200 hours of community service and seven years of probation. In May 2010, she was released from jail.
She had to give away $6.4 million to the victim in 2014 to cover the treatment of her injuries and the loss of earnings due to the assault.
In August 2018 Da Brat had to file for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11. Her filing stated her assets to the value of $108,700 while her liabilities were worth $7.8 million including the $6.4 million compensation she owed the assaulted victim of the nightclub.
She had stated that she owed $1.255 million to Sony Music, several thousands of dollars to the IRS and Georgia Department of Revenue and $12,000 to Ally Bank.
