Perez Learned to play French Horn while attending middle school. He too joined his school’s concert band. Despite his mother’s disapproval, Perez taught himself electric guitar. Perez wished to run away to Los Angeles when he was just seventeen to start his own rock band. Initially he worked at a library and shared an apartment with his father.
Tony Lares asked Perez to join his cousin Shelly Lares’ band in 1986, which performed Tejano music. Later Perez wrote in his book ‘To Selena With Love’ that he earlier disliked Tejano music and joined the band only because it paid him more than what he earned from the library.
Eventually, Perez became the musical director of Shelly’s after Tony left the band. After attaining some popularity for his guitar skills and songs he accomplished for Shelly’s, Perez formed his own band and left Shelly’s.
Abraham Quintanilla invited Perez to become part of their band Selena y Los Dinos. Abraham initially did not like the rocker image of Perez and so he insisted that he changed his appearance to suit his band.
He too feared that Perez’s relationship with his daughter Selena might ruin her career. It was a hard journey for both Perez and Selena to make Quintanilla accept Perez and later Perez and Abraham collaborated on writing songs for Selena.
During the early 1990s, Perez was arrested for driving under the influence of intoxication in San Antonio, but released later without any charges. Within a few months of this incident, Perez was also seen as part of a trashed incident in a hotel room along with two other members of the Selena Y Los Dinos band.
All of them were booked for wrestling under intoxication and damaging the hotel rooms with punch holes in the walls.
After the troubled phase of his life and career due to eloping with Selena and their marriage, Perez once again joined Quintanilla’s family and their band too. In 1993, Abraham opened a recording studio known as Q-Productions and he asked Perez to write songs for a rock band.
After Selena’s death, Perez’s friend John Garza collaborated with him to write music and they formed a rock band. Some of Perez’s former friends joined him and all of them suggested that the band could be named after him as Chris Perez Band.

Shortly after joining the band, Perez fell in love with Quintanilla’s daughter Selena who was also the front woman of the group. Quintanilla did not approve their relationship fearing that Perez’s growing popularity might damage Selena’s career.
However, both of them ignored the warnings and threats from Quintanilla and continued their personal relationship. Quintanilla Jr. expelled Perez from the band and forbade Selena to go with him.
The love between Perez and Selena was so strong that none of the efforts of Selena’s family could succeed in thwarting their relationship. Perez eloped with Selena and they both got married on April 2, 1992.
Within hours after their marriage, their elopement and marriage was announced on the radio.
While Quintanilla could not accept the developments and alienated himself for quite some time, later he approached Selena and Perez, accepted their marriage and inducted Perez back into the band. Following the marriage, Perez was fully absorbed into Quintanilla’s family.
